What Is Hyperfixation? (ADHD Glossary)
Hyperfixation is an intense, often sudden preoccupation with a topic, hobby or piece of media that dominates thoughts and free time for days to months — and then, frequently, evaporates as fast as it arrived, leaving abandoned equipment and half-finished projects.
Hyperfixation vs hyperfocus
They are cousins: hyperfocus is a session (hours of absorption); hyperfixation is a season (weeks of obsession). Both run on the ADHD interest-driven dopamine system locking onto a rich new source.
The good and the cost
Hyperfixations are how many ADHDers acquire skills at startling speed — three weeks of obsession can equal a year of casual study. The costs: neglected duties and relationships while the fixation burns, spending sprees on gear (see ADHD and impulse spending), and shame when it fades.
Riding it well
- Contain, don't suppress: give it scheduled time daily rather than letting it flood everything — a timer makes the boundary real.
- Delay the shopping: 2-week rule for gear purchases; borrow or go cheap first.
- Keep one anchor routine — sleep, meals and your core routines stay non-negotiable while the fixation runs.
- Drop the shame at the end: the skills stay. A finished hyperfixation is a completed download, not a failure.
